The Concept:
The first time I saw a chameleon crossing a busy road I stood in awe. He looked so helpless as he dodged cars, motorbikes, pedestrians, bicycles, cows and even goats. Yet to my surprise he slowed down his pace, focused on the next obstacle in front of him and passed each challenge valiantly.
It got me thinking, who are the children in this education system that need some of these chameleon crossing skills. This is where the educational model began. Meeting a child where they are, provide quality educators to help the student slow down and understand each concept and task and then keep going to face the next challenge ahead.
I have come across many chameleons crossing roads over the years and now when I see them I say a silent cheer knowing that they will succeed and cross that challenging road in front of them.
SDM offers care to individuals with disabilities in our hospital setting at the Hope & Healing Center (HHC). This includes assessments, physical therapy training to the individual and care takers.
Beginning in 2026 we will now offer special education services for students ranging from 5-13 years old. The school setting (at the Chameleon Crossing Learning Center) will be integrated for typical functioning students, and students with learning disabilities and severe disabilities.
